To me, the qualities for an effective Council member are to: be a good listener, have the ability to assimilate complex and detailed information to make decisions, have no personal agenda, be an ambassador for the City, and have the energy and time to be available to people and attend meetings and events.
I have lived and breathed these qualities throughout my time on Council.
I have been an Asheboro resident since 2006 and first came to Asheboro in 1990 when my husband Sam and I were dating. Sam’s family moved here from the eastern part of North Carolina when he was in middle school, and he is a 1982 Asheboro High School graduate. Sam’s Mom still lives in the Greystone area, and we were married in Asheboro in 1992 at First E&R United Church of Christ, where we are members. We moved back here as quickly as we could after our careers took us to Ohio, Texas, and Florida (where I am originally from). We love this city, and we look forward to many more years here.
I consider my public service work to be just as important as my professional career background, and I am blessed to have been able to give back and have learned so much through these experiences. My public service experience in Asheboro has served me very well on Council because of the familiarity I have with all aspects of the community and its organizations and businesses, and the relationships I have developed over many years. I have also forged new bonds since being on Council that will be tremendously helpful to ensure we complete the work that’s in front of us.
From 2010 to August 2023, I worked at Randolph Community College. Special Assistant to the President for Events and Projects was my role for 10 years, and, prior to that, I served as Grant Writer/Event Coordinator in Institutional Advancement and as Director of Occupational Extension in Workforce Development and Continuing Education. I also worked as Director of Marketing and Development for the Randolph Partnership for Children in Asheboro from 2006-2009. After an almost 40 year career, I retired in August 2023.
As a lifelong learner, I’m energized by learning something new and building on what I have learned. I am a Clemson University Tiger, receiving a bachelor’s degree in English in 1986. I also became a University of Texas-San Antonio Road Runner in 2002 when I received a master’s degree in public administration. Over the years, I have attended a large number of conferences and professional development sessions in communications, public relations, project management, and grant administration.
